Organic is such a trendy buzz word now, but why is it so important to buy and eat organic? Well, times have changed dramatically in the last several decades. Agriculture and the way we grow and harvest food are so vastly different than they were 100 years ago- even 50 years ago. The quality of our food has changed. Even the quality of our soil has changed! You can’t expect to grow quality food in poor quality soil.
What is organic?
The definition of organic from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that the food or agricultural product has been produced through approved methods. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering may not be used. (1) Basically, there is no junk like pesticides or synthetic fertilizers used.
Can you be more specific?
“100% organic” – means just that- 100% of the ingredients are organic (excluding salt and water). It also guarantees the product is free of GMOs (genetically modified organisms).
“Organic” – by definition means that at least 95% of the ingredients are organic (excluding salt and water).
“Made with organic ingredients” – the product contains at least 70% organic ingredients, but does not qualify to have the USDA Organic seal because the percentage of organic ingredients isn’t high enough.
So, you can buy a product that is labeled “organic” but it may still contain GMOs. Unless it is “100% organic”, you cannot ensure it is GMO-free. (Unless, of course, it says “non-GMO”.)
